Distressed antiqued mirrors create interesting light reflections and can amplify the space of a room.

Our antiqued mirrors are custom cut to our customers’ size requirements. We typically manufacture mirrors that are ¼ 5/16 of an inch in thickness. We also offer a custom restoration for all vintage mirrors, as the distressing is available in light, medium and heavy gradients.

Our vintage antiqued mirrors can be custom-made in large sizes, up to 3ft by 5 ft. We also offer distressing on new glass pieces, as large as 4ft by 8ft. On new glass, the distressing levels are typically a lot lighter, as the new glass does not have the same of wear and imperfection of old glass.

Mirrors Make an Unexpected Appearance in the Kitchen

Mirrors are a popular accessory for nearly every room of the house, so why not the kitchen as well? Thoughtful and strategic placement of mirrors is an easy way to reflect available light, visually opening up a room to make it look more spacious.

Above the stove. Mirrors emphasize the details and colors of items caught in their reflection. What’s reflected in this kitchen is a striking collection of copper pans hanging from a pot rack.

Tip: Strategically hang mirrors so that they reflect an appealing view.

According to feng shui principles, mirrors symbolize water, which clashes with fire, and therefore should hang above a stove only to allow cooks to see what’s behind them. Aside from this concern, lining an expanse behind the stove can be extremely effective in giving the illusion of a much larger space. In this example, the mirror’s antiqued appearance was achieved by distressing.

Tip: Avoid installing regular mirrored glass as a kitchen backsplash. It can easily crack from heat exposure or an accidental strike with a heavy pan or object. Look for tempered glass instead.

On a shelf. In this kitchen, the mirror hangs so it can rest on an open shelf. The tilt permits it to reflect the room’s more attractive design elements, such as the light fixture and cabinetry, as opposed to the plain ceiling.

Tip: Place mirrors so that they reflect the best aspects of a room.

Above the sink. A popular kitchen layout locates the sink beneath a window, but if that isn’t possible, why not create the illusion of a window by hanging a mirror above the sink instead? The placement here certainly tops the list for most charming uses of a mirror in the kitchen.

What Makes a Mirror a Mirror?

We take them for granted, but there is more to mirrors than meets the eye. Here’s why Custom Antique Mirror loves mirrors, and you should too!

History of Mirrors

A mirror is typically made of glass with a flat or curvy surface, and has a reflective covering over it. Mirrors aren’t only for appearance; they are also used in many technological and scientific components.

Before mirrors were manufactured, pools of water were often used to see a reflection. Mirrors date back to completely raw products, as polished stones, metals and black volcanic glass obsidian were used for this purpose.

How Mirrors Are Made

There’s just a few components needed to make a mirror, including pure silver nitrate, distilled water and ammonia. Some differences occur during the production of commercial mirrors.

First, a small amount of silver nitrate is dissolved in distilled water, with the addition of diluted ammonia until the mixture visibly changes. A different mixture of Rochelle salts and silver nitrate is boiled and filtered. The mixtures are then poured onto a properly heated piece of glass and ready to dry. To preserve the silver, a coat of paint is often added to the back of the glass.

Benefits of Mirrors

Mirrors serve many different purposes, and that’s why we think they are so great! Here are some reasons why mirrors should be incorporated into your home or business:

• Mirrors make the room appear larger.
• Mirrors make a statement. The styles, sizes and designs are extensive, which makes it easy to incorporate into just about any space.
• Mirrors attract more lighting from surrounding windows. The light reflects off of the mirror with brightens the rest of the room.
• Mirrors near the door or hallway are helpful when rushing out the door. If you have a meeting or heading to lunch, it can’t hurt to make sure you’re looking your best!
